Christopher Rantanen, a 40-year-old resident of Brandon, Vermont, was sentenced to 35 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for unlawful possession of firearms. The sentence was handed down by Chief United States District Judge Christina Reiss on January 27, 2026. Rantanen had previously pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Court records indicate that the incident began in September 2024 when Rantanen was involved in a single-car accident on U.S. Route 7 in Pittsford, Vermont. Law enforcement officers at the scene questioned Rantanen about drug or alcohol use, which he denied. While officers were issuing tickets for traffic violations related to the crash, fire department officials reported that Rantanen was found slumped over on a bench nearby. Officers again asked him about drug use, and he again denied it.
While waiting for a tow truck, police observed drug paraphernalia both inside and around Rantanen’s vehicle. After obtaining a search warrant, law enforcement found two handguns—including one privately manufactured—ammunition, fentanyl, cocaine, and other drug-related items inside the car.
A subsequent encounter occurred in November 2024 when police responded to a drug-related complaint involving Rantanen and another individual in Rutland, Vermont. Once both individuals exited their vehicle, officers saw a Glock pistol near where Rantanen had been seated. A search uncovered approximately 13 grams of fentanyl and about 19 grams of crack cocaine close to his seat.
First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt recognized the combined efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Pittsford Police Department: “First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt commended the collaborative investigatory efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsford Police Department.”
The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Arra while Lisa Shelkrot represented Rantanen.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America—a national initiative using Department of Justice resources aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators.
