Burlington, Vermont – The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont announced that Alexander Marcano, 33, from Hartford, Connecticut, was sentenced to 69 months in prison followed by a five-year supervised release. This sentence was handed down by Chief United States District Judge Christina Reiss on June 26, 2025. Marcano had previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl on December 9, 2024.
Court records indicate that on January 30, 2023, U.S. Border Patrol Agents stopped a vehicle driving erratically near North Troy, Vermont, close to the U.S./Canada border. Marcano was a passenger in this vehicle. The agents discovered that he had an extraditable warrant from Connecticut for a shooting incident for which he was later convicted of Assault in the First Degree – Serious Physical Injury. During the traffic stop, authorities found Marcano in possession of over 98 grams of fentanyl, more than 41 grams of cocaine base, over 75 grams of cocaine powder, a loaded nine-millimeter pistol, over $20,000 in cash and drug paraphernalia indicating drug distribution.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the cooperative efforts of various agencies involved in the investigation including the United States Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Vermont Drug Task Force.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Lasher and Corinne Smith while Ian Carleton represented Marcano.
