A Detroit man, Terry Dawayne Catchings, 31, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Vermont on charges related to drug distribution. The indictment includes two counts of distributing cocaine and cocaine base and one count of possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute.
Catchings pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on January 15, 2026, before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle. Judge Doyle ordered that Catchings remain in detention while awaiting trial.
Court documents state that Catchings is accused of distributing cocaine and cocaine base on December 23 and December 30, 2025, at a location in Vermont. On January 7, 2026, Vermont State Police stopped him for speeding on Interstate 89 in Randolph. A search of his vehicle led to the discovery of approximately 114 grams of cocaine concealed within the ceiling fabric lining.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office clarified that an indictment consists only of allegations and emphasized that “Catchings is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.” If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for each count. Sentencing would be determined by the District Court according to advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and statutory sentencing factors.
First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt recognized the work of the Morristown Police Department, Vermont Drug Task Force, FBI, and Vermont State Police in the investigation.
Assistant United States Attorney Dana E. Hill is prosecuting the case. Kevin Henry serves as defense counsel for Catchings.
