A federal grand jury has indicted Peter Baez, 41, of Northfield, Vermont, on charges of possession and sale of stolen firearms. The indictment was returned on July 10, 2025.

Baez pleaded not guilty during an arraignment held on August 7, 2025 before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle. Judge Doyle ordered Baez released on conditions while awaiting trial.

Court records and statements presented at the arraignment indicate that the charges are connected to Baez’s alleged unlawful possession and sale of firearms that belonged to his late father, Pedro Baez. Pedro Baez passed away in the fall of 2024. His will left his home and property to his daughter. Despite being aware of these terms, Peter Baez reportedly kept some of the firearms and sold them to local gun stores, keeping the proceeds for himself.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated: “an indictment contains allegations only and that Baez is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.” If convicted, Baez could face up to 10 years in prison. Sentencing would be determined by the District Court based on advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and statutory sentencing factors.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher said: “I commend the investigatory efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and thank the Berlin and Montpelier Police Departments for their assistance.”

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt is prosecuting the case. William Vasiliou II is representing Peter Baez.
