The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont has announced that John Caleb Wright, a 43-year-old resident of Williston, Vermont, has been indicted by a federal grand jury. The indictment, returned on June 12, 2025, charges Wright with attempting to evade payment of more than $1 million in taxes. His arraignment is set for July 22 at 11:00 A.M. before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle in Burlington.

Court records reveal that after being notified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about enforced collection actions to recover his tax debt exceeding $1 million, Wright allegedly transferred his cryptocurrency assets twice in 2021. These transfers moved the assets from a cryptocurrency exchange accessible to the IRS to an off-exchange, unhosted wallet beyond their reach.

The United States Attorney’s Office highlighted that an indictment only contains allegations and that Wright remains presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. However, any sentence would be determined by the District Court with guidance from the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and statutory sentencing factors.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the investigatory efforts of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation division.

Assistant United States Attorney Corinne Smith is prosecuting the case, while Brooks McArthur, Esq., represents Wright.
